TikTok app has been the most entertaining app for people across the globe. It is a China-based company which helps in sharing content on various social networking sites. It has been helping people share content easily at the same time with artificial intelligence; they are receiving the content which might interest them.
But there are serious concerns about the app in India. This is because there were instances of people hurting while recording a video for the TikTok app. There was a case where a 19-year-old Delhi boy got shot and died on the scene. All of this happened while recording a video with a country made a gun. Similarly, a group of friends in Tamil Nadu was recording a video while riding a motorcycle. And a student from the group died while recording the video.
People are playing in the middle of the road and are coming up with their own stunts with vehicles. These contents are getting more viral due to its difficulty. This sort of content is encouraging kids to do similar stunts and they are endangering their lives in this process. An advocate and a Social activist recently approached the Madras High court to ban the Tiktok app. They were asking to delete the videos which do not meet the guidelines of the High Court. This requisition was there for the fact that people were becoming more aggressive towards each other; especially school children who were coming up with content which would make them a victim of sexual predators.
On 3rd April 2019, as the ban order was passed, more than 6 million videos were deleted as they didn’t meet the guidelines of the High Court. And with the help of the Supreme Court, on 19th April 2019, complete removal of the app from the Apple App Store and from Google Play Store so that no new users were happening. But the existing users still can share the video and the content made in TikTok.
Since the content doesn’t pose any threat to the Indian Government, the ban on the app is questionable yet it is helping the general public by maintaining the rules and guidelines for the content. Kids these days have access to most of the content on social networking sites and on other content sharing apps. It is hard to control the content exposure to when comparing with bans and guidelines.
Elaborative laws are fastening the foreclosures on these apps if somehow the ban faces opposition by the general public. The law will help in maintaining a standard to join the app, along with other details like age, gender, etc. This will help in parents protecting their child from explicit content and the features like parental controls will be helping in narrowing down the content or creating a child-friendly content for the kids and they will be able to monitor everything their child watches.
